Life will be sweet – Brownies

…or, as I like to say:„When life gives you lemons, make lemonade“. My personal pile of lemons is coeliac disease – my body can’t process gluten. The delicious lemonade I have turned this into is my blog plus all my other activities like food styling and photography…. This blog entry is dedicated to Julia, who adds some sugar to her life with her motto “Life will be sweet”, which is also the name of her blog. Julia suffers from a rare condition called Mola hydatidosa.

Homemade Cereal Bars

Spring has sprung: it’s finally here and humans, animals and plants can feel it. Not long now and everything around us will be green and in bloom! These days, we’re all preferring to spend more time outside to enjoy the sun, warmth and fresh air. My popular cereal bars are a perfect fit for this time of year. This recipe was one of the first ones on my blog and is particularly relevant now: cereal bars are the ideal snack to eat during sport, work, school or kindergarten, and they’re quick and easy to make!

Deluxe Cooking Class with Andi Schweiger in Munich

We’re different! Us food bloggers – we’re a very eccentric tribe. Every time I meet up with fellow foodies and spend an entire day talking about eating, food trends and food photography, I realise it anew. Last weekend, I attended a very special food blogger meeting in Munich where we all met up for a cooking class with Andi Schweiger. The participants were winners of the FoodBlog Award and this was our prize from the Berlin event last November.

Green Smoothie with Basil Seeds

What’s hot, what’s new? Last week I talked to the Marketing Natives about my 10 personal commandments of success. One of them is “be up to date on what’s hot and what’s new”. And what’s hot at the moment are basil seeds which belong to the superfood family and are cousins of the ubiquitous chia seeds. In order to read up on the the latest food trends, we usually have to peer across the Atlantic to the US, but when it comes to this particular healthy and versatile food, we don’t have to look far: there is a delicious basil seed superfood drink on the market in Austria already. It’s called „FRIYA“ and is a real eye catcher with its red colour and floating black basil seeds.

Low-Carb Muffins with Poppyseed and Coconut Oil

Low-carb here, there and everywhere… Lowering or eliminating carbohydrates is in everybody’s mouth, so to speak. Mostly, the goal of a low- or no-carb diet is to lose weight. My low-carb muffins however weren’t created for weight loss but rather as part of my quest to bake delicious flourless muffins. And lo and behold – the path led to success!

Quinoa Salad with Pomegranate

Today, like many times before, I was asked whether I didn’t miss bread and maybe wished I had a different type of intolerance. What kinds of questions are these!? But never mind, I always tell myself that there are things that are much much worse than coeliac disease and that I’m dealing with it pretty well. Of course, occasionally I miss baked rolls and plaited buns, of course. Sometimes on my way home, when I smell fresh bread or feel a craving coming on, I wish I could have some. On the other hand, coeliac disease got me interested in cooking and alternative grains – foods that are naturally gluten-free and that aren’t a substitute but a valuable addition to my cooking, which became more creative and colourful due to those necessary alternatives. Quinoa definitely belongs in that group. Over here at my place, there is a truckload of jars filled with yellow polenta, red and white quinoa, amaranth pops, golden millet, brown buckwheat etc.

Aromatic and gluten-free teff flatbread

Wraps are a quick and delicious in-between snack and can be filled with a variety of colourful ingredients. Unfortunately, Vienna hasn’t really caught on to the gluten-free wrap trend yet. Cornmeal wraps would be great as well. Wrapstars had the genius idea of selling wraps filled with the most superior ingredients directly from their very stylish food truck.

Healthy, Flourless Chocolate Cake

Again, one of those guilt-free cakes!? Of course this one contains natural fats and agave syrup as a sweetener, but it does completely do away with flour and conventional sugar – and one very peculiar ingredient makes it extra soft and juicy.

Fondue Dip & “Punschkrapferl” Petits Fours – Happy New Year!

And it’s the end of the year again! I don’t know about you, but for me, 2014 just flew by. Maybe because it was one event after the other, maybe because I experienced so many amazing things, worked incredibly hard and enjoyed a ton of unforgettable, happy and funny moments – but 2014 was definitely my year.

One Millet Porridge for the ORF Coming Up!

The other day, the ORF (Austrian TV and Radio) came over for a visit to look over my shoulder while I cooked, styled and photographed food. It was all pretty exciting. Kerstin Polzer (lovely wife of Oliver Polzer) and the camera guy arrived a little early and since I’ve been wanting to share my millet porridge with you for ages, this seemed like the ideal opportunity.

Ginger and Lemon Drink with Basil Seeds

A few weeks ago, I told you about those great basil seeds I found. I’ve been reading up on them a little bit since then and have also made an amazing discovery – the FRIYA drink with basil seeds. The creators of this crazy but yummy drink are Stephan and Vincenz and their little start-up. Thanks to these guys, this superfood is now available in Austria – namely as a drink called Friya. Looks eccentric, tastes amazing and serves as a very satisfying in-between snack. One of the basil seed’s useful properties is the feeling of satiety they give. Cue – fewer cravings and smaller food intake. Hier you can learn a little more about these magical seeds.
