Millet and Turmeric Muffins

Breakfast is my absolute favourite meal of the day. I look forward to it the second I open my eyes and it’s usually something healthy which gives me enough energy to face the challenges of the day. I really lay it on thick on the weekends though – it’s a celebration of the best meal of the day. Sometimes however you don’t really have that much time to eat in the morning. That’s when muffins come into play.

Banana and Walnut Pancakes

Pancakes are pure happiness! If you really want to score brownie points with me, surprise me with pancakes. In the morning. Or for lunch. Or dinner. I can put a bunch of those away every hour of every day.  There is absolutely nothing better than a small fluffy piece of dough in a pan drenched in honey or maple syrup and garnished with sundry yummy toppings!

Gluten-free Pumpkin Loaf

In these parts, it’s pastries and cakes. In the US, Australia and England, the ubiquitous accessory to your afternoon coffee or tea is a loaf of something or a cake that looks like it’s a loaf of something, like the ever popular banana bread. I like cakes made in loaf tins as they are convenient to cut. I usually slice the entire loaf as soon as it’s cool and freeze it in baggies – well, almost the entire loaf, minus whatever I eat immediately, while it’s still warm. This means that at all times, my freezer contains a bit of happiness, ready to make my day a little better.

Carpe Diem with Banana Bread

For men it’s the pub crawl. For women it’s brunch. That’s how it used to be, at least. In German-speaking countries, the ladies don’t brunch but instead hold something called a “Kaffeekränzchen”, which is essentially like brunch, but with coffee and cake. The name, literally meaning “coffee crown”, stems from a crown bequeathed onto the victors of shooting competitions during Lent. The name lost its original meaning over the 16th and 17th centuries and eventually covered get-togethers of varying kinds, but the one remaining original rule was that the participants, by their mere presence, made a commitment to organise the subsequent meeting.

Raw Coconut and Rhubarb Cake

Virtually every cooking and recipe fan in Austria knows the country’s top food magazine GUSTO. But now there’s something new and super interesting out there for food aficionados: GUSTO’s rebel child GUSTO Lola. 164 pages strong, the quarterly magazine first appeared in March 2016 and I’ve already had the pleasure of contributing a piece alongside some of my blogger colleagues – a vegan raw coconut and rhubarb cake.

Salzburger Nockerln und Frühjahrsgletscherskilauf

Durchatmen.

Chocolate Mousse Smoothie

I’m sure you’ve heard this before: chocolate makes you happy. Actually, to be exact, it’s the cocoa that does it. It contains essential nutrients like theobromine that promote the brain’s release of serotonin and dopamine and elevate your mood.
